Ladies and Gentleman, Introducing Steve Patton

I would like to submit my birthday challenge.  I turn 40 this year, and have 2 challenges I want to try to tackle:

444 in 4
This is 400 miles cycling, 40 miles running, and 4 miles of swimming in 4 days.  I'm going to try this in Phoenix next week when I'm there.  The conditions will have to be just right, so I'm not sure if I'll do it.  The main Birthday Challenge I'd like to do this year is the following:

In one day:
4.0 kilometers swim
40 leagues biking (approx. 120 miles)
40 kilometers running (approx 25 miles)

Probably do this in August, as my 40th birthday is in December.  Please let me know what I have to do to get the 2nd one sanctioned.  I'd post it on my website along with other Epic workouts I do.  please see, www.pattonathletics.com/Sub/epic.htm

Thanks,
Steve Patton

Todd Break 700!

This afternoon I finally broke the 700 pull up barrier.  I managed 707 pull ups in 60 minutes.  The pull up portion of my challenge is completed, though I am still wondering if I should contact Guiness and go for an "official" attempt.  The breakdown:

minutes/pull ups

1-30 / 11 per min

31-50 / 12 per min

51-60 / 13 per min (within the last 15 secs I did 7 additional pull ups).

Brian says it was the Beethoven he was playing in the background.  I feel like I had a finishing kick like Roger Bannister in the home stretch.

Steve Schulz Report

well, the first part of the challenge went awkwardly with one broken
car and a few changed plans.  the date for the devils lake portion of the
challenge has been changed to april 1 due to people not being able to make it on the 25th.  i'll send over a brief report of the first part later in the
week.

Steve Schulz Contemplates Monster Challenge

now all he's got to do is, um, do it.

it took me a while to figure out what to do but i think i finally nailed it down tonight. first it was gonna be a weekend challenge. then it was gonna be a weeklong challenge. soon after it went to a single day. i've finally decided to divide the challenge into two versions of it. one with friction, and one without! here ya go:

this part of the challenge is going to happen during our tour de force with southern sandstoney friction.

March 13-19

1 V9
1 V8
2 V7's
3 V6's
4 V5's
5 V4's
1 5.13 and for good measure, since you all know how much i love the highball, lets toss in 5 scary highballs.

The second part of my challenge is gonna take place on the wonderful frictionless quartzite we've grown to love at devils lake.

March 25

1. Highball Slab at Burma-V2
2. Voodoo eliminate at Burma-V4/5
3. Pinball Arete-V5
4. Lunge on top of the West Bluff-V3
5. 45 degree left-V4
6. Anchorpoint-V7
7. Beautiful Soup-V7/8
8. Smooth Operator-V4
9. The greatest arete-V?
10. Bark Biter-V4
11. Green seam-V5
12. Show Me The Kind-V4
13. Barking Slab-V1
14. Bulbous Left center-V7
15. The Zipper-V6
16. The Flatiron-V4
17. Tombstone Classic-V2
18. Beer Buzz-V2
19. Jenga-V7
20. Mantle Project-V?
21. Slope of Dadaism-V3
22. Warmup at Burma-V0 As everyone associated with birthday challenges knows, a challenge just isnt complete without some fritters involved.
23. eat 3 fritters on the 25th.

we're definitely gonna need some spotters and pads for the 25th. let me know if you want in and we'll get you the info you need. its gonna be a good month and i got a hunch that this will be bessie's inaugural trip to the lake. gonna be good.

Anthony Brantley Sings Up

To Whom It May Concern at Birthday Challenge.com:

I would like to submit a Birthday Challenge for my 35th birthday, which occurs on April 16th of 2006.

I found your website a while ago and it’s been a great motivator for my 35th birthday.  It’s great to see what others have done to make their life memorial, fun and of painful, keep it going.

My challenge is straight forward, but there is one task I think I should clarify so you understand why I’m doing it.  Otherwise I’m doing this for the fun of completing an epic challenge and testing myself like everyone else.  My sport of choice now is ultra-marathons, prior to that I raced road/mtn. bikes for Sierra Nevada Ale, and back in the day I was a Speedo wearing triathlon geek.

Currently I’m a Detective for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Dept. here in Sacramento, California.  In July of 2005 two officers died and one was critically injured while on duty flying one of our helicopters (Star 6).  This was the greatest tragedy my department had ever seen.  The pilot was a former partner of mine and I was on duty when this occurred.  He crashed in the area I was working at the time.   This struck me hard because I had to see it first hand.

The crash occurred on the bluffs over looking Lake Natomas which is a nearby lake.  It is located along our bike trail system which parallels the American River.  The money I’m donating is for the memorial that is to be built and then placed near the crash site on the bluffs.  The cost at this time I’m told is over $50,000.  I am going to announce my birthday challenge in our Departments newsletter/e-mail to help draw attention to the memorial’s fund raising effort.

The challenge will take place on the American River Bike Trail, the Folsom Lake trails system, and on Lake Natomas.  It will consist of the following:

DONATE $350 TO THE STAR-SIX MEMORIAL

STARTING AT 3:50AM ON APRIL 16TH (SUNDAY) AND WITH 5.3 HOURS OF SLEEP COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING:

35 MINUTE WARM-UP; STRETCHING, 35 SIT-UPS, AND 35 PUSHUPS.

35 MILE TRAIL RUN STARTING IN FAIR OAKS AND CONTINUING ALONG TRAIL SYSTEM TO THE FINISH LINE OF THE AMERICAN RIVER 50 RUN IN AUBURN.

I’M RUNNING THE RACE TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE CHALLENGE AND IT’S THE FIRST 50 MILER I EVER RAN.

35 MINUTE MASSAGE AT FINISH OF THE RUN BY MY WIFE WHO IS A CERTIFIED MASSAGE THERAPIST.

35 MILE ROAD BIKE RIDE BACK TO LAKE NATOMAS.

3.5 MILE KAYAK ON LAKE NATOMAS.

35 OREOS EATEN IN 35 MINUTES AT THE FINISH.  CHASED WITH 3.5oz OF MR. JACK DANIELS, MY LIQUOR OF CHOICE.

**** BONUS TASK*****

AS PART OF THE CHALLENGE BUT MORE OF AN ADDITIONAL MOTIVATOR

IF ALL TASKS ARE COMPLETED ON TIME I’LL HAVE A TATTOO DONE COMEMERATING THE CHALLENGE AT THE TATTOO SHOP I REGULARLY GO TO.

THE TATTOO IDEA THUS FAR;

A COLORED NAUTICAL STAR, WITH THE NUMBERS 35 AND 2006 IN ROMAN NUMERALS, SURROUNDED BY FLAMES ON MY ANKLE.

Besides the bonus, the challenge is more anal retentive then I would have liked but I couldn’t get a way from the “35” theme.

I hope you guys like my challenge and want to come help me out and drink my JD and beer.

Thank you, Anthony Brantley

steve, thanks and sorry i didn't reply earlier. i am waiting for some pics from my buddy and it will be sent. thanks for the support. it was kinda embarassing not finishing, and your email the other day made my day when i found out that i can still submit it.

cheers, ben

ps: my buddy is going to a "board" BDC in april where he will snowboard 31000 feet, longboard 31 miles, and maybe do something with kite-boarding on the salt flats. more to come on that. i am totally trying to get the utah crowd into the BDC, and there has been good reception so far.

Ben Woods' Wrap-Up

steve,

it is with great regret that i report that the BC stopped short at about 8.5 miles into the run when those who had been given the authority to pull the plug in the name of my health pulled the plug (something about not being able to stand up straight or put 3 words together coherently).

i will attempt the same challenge in two years when i am a 4th year med student and can schedule more than 2 hours per week to train. the ice climbing was fantastic (i highly recommend this at night) and the skiing was amazing. my old college roommates thought the BC idea was brilliant, and a herd of them showed up for the event (we had six people climbing ice at 1:00am this morning). thank you for putting this site together as this is the kind of goal setting and the kinds of activities that strongly appeal to me. if you are still interested in the story and pics i can certainly send them (though this is kind of embarrassing as i know i could have pulled this off a few years ago).

cheers and many thanks

Binky Greene's Challenge Announced

LA Marathon March 19th

This may not seem like much of a challenge compared with the endeavors of yore. It's a monolithic and, literally and figuratively, pedestrian event of little humor or creativity. My particular challenge is not to finish the marathon, but to regain enough of my endurance to feel like I've gotten back on the horse. I've got a 13 week training program that's trying to get me off the couch and over the finish line in less than 4 hours. Picture to follow on starting physique. Not to make excuses, but shoulder surgery followed by antibiotic resistant pneumonia, coupled with a now 2 year old, makes for bad fitness.

I've got journal and update pics to offend the masses.

Merry Christmas From Nate Emerson in Wisconsin

I just had my second bottle of Malbec and took down my
third pound of meat for the day, I haven't slept in
about two and a half days, and there's some obnoxious
trance playing in the internet cafe. I just finished
eating asado in mendoza with Ian Lewis. Did guys
know about his challenge last year? He paddled solo
across Lake Mendota and then ran from the shore to
Devils Lake, and did 27 laps on routes. I'm really
being a pussy these days.

Anyways Merry Christmas from the miniskirt capital of
the world.

And Todd, it does seem like you should incorporate an
alcohol element into the challenge. myself, I'm going
to see how out of shape I can get. I'm probably down
to 7 pull-ups in one shot.

Wish you guys a happy holiday.

ciao (did i spell that right Lindl?)
Nate

Chris LaBounty

Your site has motivated me for many a personal BDC, but this is the 1st time I've posted to the site.  Work is nuts, 1st baby is almost here, and I'm tired of everyone who says my climbing, paddling, and adventure trips are numbered.  Fuck that, fuck you, and fuck that. It's my 30th, and here's the plan.

3000  Meters Elevation Gain
300    Push, Pull, & Sit Ups
30     Hours Straight, Pitches, Km Distance
3       Big beers, big scotch, big cigars

Destination is Yosemite, and my long time friend & climbing buddy, Brandon Thau will join.

Just a walk in the park,
-Chris LaBounty

Litler Matson's 55th Birthday Challenge

To understand my list of challenges, here’s my history . . . I was born February 3, 1951 in Gary, Indiana. Nearing my 6th decade of living, I’ve decided to challenge myself by participating in the Birthday Challenge.  Due to my health, I have some limitations – to name a few, I have diabetes and Sarcoidosis, not to mention the sickle-cell trait.  Although my health has been in a shambles for the last decade, I’ve always been determined to live my life.  I’m a teacher at Sherman Middle School in Madison, Wisconsin and my students are all privy to my birthday challenge.  Here goes . . .

1)     Play 55 games of BINGO

2)     Drink 55 Vodka lemonades in 55 days

3)     Exercise for 5.5 minutes a day

4)     Teach students 55 new words

5)     Give 55 positive comments to 55 students

6)     Learn 55 new facts about students and people at school

7)     Keep my hair groomed (combed neatly) for 55 days

8)     Do 5 crunches for 55 days

9)     I will not push, poke, pinch or pull hair of my students for 55 days

10) Walk around the school 5 days of the 55 days

11) Reduce m y blood-glucose levels by 55 points

12) Do 55 leg lifts (not during sex), for 55 days

13) Eat 5 midget pickles for 55 days

14) Eat an apple a day for 55 days

Bill Allen's Challenge Report

I know that I didn't leave enough time for you to respond before I actually did the event. I did do it, but unfortunately I didn't think to take pictures during or after the event. I best I could do is to take some now, after the fact ones that could show me running on the track. I did write up and post a report of it on Runners World On-line forums.

http://forums.runnersworld.com/thread.jspa?threadID=308342&tstart=660

Thank YOU for your interest, and more importantly THANK you for your great Birthday Challenge site, it was just the shot in the arm/life that I needed. And I'm so looking forward to next years challenge.

P.S. the "DirtDiva" I mentioned in the RWOL posting is Catra Corbett from your site that's the person that turned me onto your site.
