Latest Updates from Birthday Challengers Far and Wide...

Merry Christmas From Nate Emerson in Wisconsin

I just had my second bottle of Malbec and took down my
third pound of meat for the day, I haven't slept in
about two and a half days, and there's some obnoxious
trance playing in the internet cafe. I just finished
eating asado in mendoza with Ian Lewis. Did guys
know about his challenge last year? He paddled solo
across Lake Mendota and then ran from the shore to
Devils Lake, and did 27 laps on routes. I'm really
being a pussy these days.

Anyways Merry Christmas from the miniskirt capital of
the world.

And Todd, it does seem like you should incorporate an
alcohol element into the challenge. myself, I'm going
to see how out of shape I can get. I'm probably down
to 7 pull-ups in one shot.

Wish you guys a happy holiday.

ciao (did i spell that right Lindl?)

Chris LaBounty

Your site has motivated me for many a personal BDC, but this is the 1st time I've posted to the site.  Work is nuts, 1st baby is almost here, and I'm tired of everyone who says my climbing, paddling, and adventure trips are numbered.  Fuck that, fuck you, and fuck that. It's my 30th, and here's the plan.

3000  Meters Elevation Gain
300    Push, Pull, & Sit Ups
30     Hours Straight, Pitches, Km Distance
3       Big beers, big scotch, big cigars

Destination is Yosemite, and my long time friend & climbing buddy, Brandon Thau will join.

Just a walk in the park,

Litler Matson's 55th Birthday Challenge

To understand my list of challenges, here’s my history . . . I was born February 3, 1951 in Gary, Indiana. Nearing my 6th decade of living, I’ve decided to challenge myself by participating in the Birthday Challenge.  Due to my health, I have some limitations – to name a few, I have diabetes and Sarcoidosis, not to mention the sickle-cell trait.  Although my health has been in a shambles for the last decade, I’ve always been determined to live my life.  I’m a teacher at Sherman Middle School in Madison, Wisconsin and my students are all privy to my birthday challenge.  Here goes . . .

1)     Play 55 games of BINGO

2)     Drink 55 Vodka lemonades in 55 days

3)     Exercise for 5.5 minutes a day

4)     Teach students 55 new words

5)     Give 55 positive comments to 55 students

6)     Learn 55 new facts about students and people at school

7)     Keep my hair groomed (combed neatly) for 55 days

8)     Do 5 crunches for 55 days

9)     I will not push, poke, pinch or pull hair of my students for 55 days

10) Walk around the school 5 days of the 55 days

11) Reduce m y blood-glucose levels by 55 points

12) Do 55 leg lifts (not during sex), for 55 days

13) Eat 5 midget pickles for 55 days

14) Eat an apple a day for 55 days

15) No soda or any kind of soft drink for 55 days

Bill Allen's Challenge Report

I know that I didn't leave enough time for you to respond before I actually did the event. I did do it, but unfortunately I didn't think to take pictures during or after the event. I best I could do is to take some now, after the fact ones that could show me running on the track. I did write up and post a report of it on Runners World On-line forums.

http://forums.runnersworld.com/thread.jspa?threadID=308342&tstart=660

Thank YOU for your interest, and more importantly THANK you for your great Birthday Challenge site, it was just the shot in the arm/life that I needed. And I'm so looking forward to next years challenge.

P.S. the "DirtDiva" I mentioned in the RWOL posting is Catra Corbett from your site that's the person that turned me onto your site.

Ben Woods

howdy folks,

below is my personal birthday challenge. I am still working on getting sponsors to pledge cash for the 4th Street Clinic, a clinic here in Salt Lake City for the homeless. here it is:

-climb 29 pitches of ice up little cottonwood canyon
-ski 29,000 vertical feet at alta

-encourage 29 people to become aware of the homeless situation in salt lake city and to become involved please pass me any advice on organization or anything. i need to do to make this official. many thanks to those who have put together the website and have continued this gnarly tradition. it really has given me something dream and work for and hopefully finally achieve this month.

cheers,

 ben woods

Forgot to mention, any and all support and help will be accepted with open arms, though the ski passes are beyond my ability to front. i can provide plenty of hot grub and christmas goodies, and a place to crash that weekend.

Bill Alden

It's pretty lame by the standards that you've established on your site. But for me it's quite a challenge at this time in my life, and besides it'll give me something to go up from.

I'm turning 45 on Nov. 9th (2 days away) and so I'm going to run 45 miles. This would normally be a challenge (although I have run 3 ultras including a 50 miler) but at this time in my life it's a much bigger and crazier challenge. I've been injured with little running for over a year. I finally underwent knee surgery in August. Turns out it was Arthritis. They clean it up a bit and I've been slowly trying to come back since. But I've only had a couple of weeks with my mileage in the low 20's and my monthly mileage hasn't been much more than that 45 miles that I'm going to TRY to do in a day.

I coach a high school XC team and was thinking about doing our 3 mile course 15 times but then thought that since it's very hilly both my knees and my Achilles that have been acting up from running with my runners on that course would probably leave me injured if I tried to run 45 miles on it. So I'd need something flatter. What's flatter than a track so I'm doing 181 laps on the track.

I've told my runners so that now I can't back out. They are going to be looking at me out the school windows all day seeing if I'm still going. I don't know if they are more shocked by the 181 laps or the fact that I won't be using any music during it. Told them that would defeat my purpose of making it more of a mental challenge as well as physical.

Josh Fairchild up this weekend

Oseary,

Mostly final plan, to be amended as the gods dictate.

96 kilometers on civilized bike, 6400 feet of climbing.
64 kilometers on hippy bike, 3200 feet of climbing.
9.6 kilometers of running (jogging, really)
32 grilled cheese sandwiches and Camparis
32 sardines

The plan is pretty simple.  Ride a couple of laps on Oak Glen - front side approach and middle approach - on road bike, round trip from my house.  Ride mountain rigs from South Fork of the Santa Ana River to my house in Redlands.  Run a little here and there.  Eat some sandwiches and sardines - maybe even some grilled cheese & sardine sandwiches.  (Is that cheating?) And drink Campari.

Everyone/anyone is invited, bring your BC kit and red beanies.

Steve Schulz Report

Well, the challenge kind of went off. it kept on getting postponed due to snowstorms. Then when we finally tried it the gondola to the top of the mountain closed multiple times throwing off the main part of the challenge. the deck drops went off without a hitch and that was by far the best part of the day. since this past challenge didn't go so well, we are coming up with something good for march of next year.

I've since moved back to the ice fields of Wisconsin so the challenge will be taking place at devils lake primarily. I'll also be raising funds for the access fund, the Minnesota climbers association, and we'll also be taking donations for replacing lower off anchors at red wing in Minnesota. should be good and I'll have to make up for last years challenge!!

Rebecca Burnett

I came across your website a few weeks ago and have been contemplating a birthday challenge ever since. My fiancé thought I was nuts until I sent him the link. So, in an attempt to be a part of all of this craziness I put together what I think is a good challenge:

Birthday: Oct 6 Age: 32 (YIKES!!)

Challenge (in 32 hours):
* 32 km run/mtn bike (6.4 mile run/6.4 mile bike/3.2 mile run/4 mile bike): 32 push-ups/sit-ups every 3.2 miles * 32 'continuous' laps in pool (~1600 yards) * 32 ball tosses to Rio (got to get the dog involved) * 3200' elevation gain (hiking) * 32 miles on my road bike * 32 acts of kindness * 3.2 shots of sake and 16 pieces of sushi * Raise $320 for charity (minimum)

I guess I am committed to this now that it is in writing! Maybe I'll find a few more things to throw into the mix. Do let me know what you all think and if this is to be considered a true 'birthday challenge'.

Hans' Announces New Challenger, Jim Cope

Steve,

I'd like you to email my friend Jim Cope. He is turning 50 on September 22nd. I've started him being committed to ten days of challenges for his birthday.  We have: a 50 pitch day, ( in the gym), a 50 km hiking/running day, a 50 of each 10,000 challenge exercise day, a 50,000 kg weight lifting day, and an all american day that will be 5 hot dogs, 5 beers, 50 base ball throws, 50 football throws, and last 50 or five to be determined.

I want you to give him some: encouragement, ideas for the other five days, and accountability by listing him on the site.

I took him up the nose in May as an early gift for his birthday. His daughters babysit for me and he's only a mile from my house. He lost 45 lbs since he was 40 years old.  He's been helping me get to two plates on the bench press.

From Mammoth...

See what you started.  Did you hear about the bat boy who got suspended because a Dodger pitcher challenged him with your milk challenge (for the record, Todd Mei started the Milk Challenge, but same thing...)?

You should do talk shows.

Russ' Night Ride

Russ McBride is training for the Furnace Creek 508. Here's his latest adventure.

Fright Night Report
by Russ McBride

I decided to get some night riding and sleep deprivation practice in on my favorite ride, King Ridge, up near Santa Rosa.  So, Friday night I left Duncan Mills on my bike at midnight with a lot of layers on and headed out past Cazadero.  King Ridge has a a wilderness feeling to it, with twisty hilly roads that head up through the redwoods.  I've ridden it during the day once and only seen two cars, so in the middle of the night it felt pretty remote--hmm, maybe spooky even.  In fact I started imagining what it would take to really spook me and in my groggy world bounded by the small cone of my bike light I began playing this game against myself where I'd simultaneously try to scare myself and not let myself scare me.  I started imagining Blair witch incidents and people with pitchforks jumping out into the road at me from the darkness. Little did I know that this wouldn't be necessary as nature had her own frights in store.

I started hearing in the otherwise dead silence rustling from both sides of the road, at first just a little and then rising to a full crescendo of breaking branches and crunching leaves, like a stampede in the darkness.  Hearing so much noise but not being able to see anything in the darkness officially spooked me. I told myself it was just deer even though it sounded like pack of water buffalo.

Sure enough, as I'm coming down a roller a pair of deer popped into the 30ft beam of my headlight and froze ... like, uh ... deer in a headlight.  With only a few feet of reaction space available I slalomed between them utilizing a few terror-induced expletives, their hooves clanking loudly on the pavement.  Going down in the middle of nowhere at 2am with no cell reception in the 40 degree temps wouldn't be good.  From here out I was paranoid about the edge of my light beam, reading into the shadows anything that looked like it might be a deer. Oh crap! Oh no, just a tree.  Oh crap! No, a shadow.

So, I wasn't too worried when at the top edge of my light field I noticed a bat or owl or something flapping around.  My lack of interest lasted about 1 second as it flew down toward my light, because right then it calamitously smacked into my left arm, across my chest, and against my lap.  I screamed bloody murder. What the f**ck!?  What kind of bat would fly right into you?  I checked to see if I'd gotten bit but I looked o.k.  Jesus! I still had 85 miles left in my ride and this was scaring the crap out of me.

I passed a skunk road pancake and then a live version in the middle of the road that was too slow to hit me, a moving target.  More deer, but off to the side thankfully, and some fury creatures (foxes?) running into the bushes.  Why the hell was the entire wildlife population of northern California coming onto my road?  The only guess I could make was that a bike makes for a really good sneak attack vehicle.  It's quiet and on the windy roads you can't see its light until the last second.  And on rarely traveled roads the critters are used to moseying around on the pavement at night.

O.k., I hit the Tin Barn road intersection and figured that it would be prudent to take the short cut back thereby cutting my ride in half.  The odds didn't look good, even with the short-cut, for making it back to the car without having a wildlife-induced accident.  So, on the steep downhill on Tin Barn road I cranked up my light and scanned the road super carefully.  I'm going about 30mph and weirdly, I see small boulders sprinkled up ahead on the road.  What the hell?  Road work?  A prank?  As I jam the brakes and as the boulders come into the strong part of my light beam I hear this terrifying snorting/squealing and the "boulders" jolt in random directions which makes my simple slalom maneuver more like a quarterback blitz evasion.  Boars!  Freaking boars!  Jesus Christ! What the freaking hell?!  I curved around the last of the portly beasts and tried to regain a normal breathing pattern as I worried about boar fangs.

At this point I pretty much assumed a bear was going to jump out and take a bite out of my tire, or that a herd of rabid squirrels would launch themselves, kamikaze-style  into my spokes, but except for another close call with some deer the last of the 50 miles was terror-free (though the coastal fog dropped the temperature 15 degrees).  I think the more-trafficked roads on the west side kept the critters off the roads over there.  I dropped onto route 1 and made it back to the Scooby-van after 4am, surprised that I didn't wreck.

So, aspiring zoologists, go get on a bike and head out to King Ridge at 3am, otherwise, stick to doing battle with cars.  They're a lot more predictable. --Russ

Reed To Try Again

His challenge may not be over as Reed has vowed to give another shot at San G to the Sea. This time, ascending the Vivian Creek trail (steeper but shorter), Then hitting the road from Fossil Falls and skipping the mtn biking. Seems much more doable. Now we pray for clear air...

Josh Fairchild Alters His Challenge

We may not have reported it but Josh had been concocting climbing 32,000' on his bike in one day. Here's the latest:

So, I've been thinking about my BC.  I actually feel fine from yesterday, however - I calculated that to get 32000 ft of vertical gain on the bike, I'd need to get 45ft per minute for 12 hours straight. That doesn't seem like a challenge.  That sounds downright impossible. So, I'm reworking it a bit. 100 miles, with 3200m of gain on the bike (shouldn't be too tough) 32 ptiches of climbing above 3200m.  (where to find this might be a problem in late October)

Fritter Queen Jacqui Florine Blitzes John Muir Trail!

Hey Y'all, Jacqueline just called from the top of Whitney. - The official south end of the John Muir Trail.  It was 1:07 PM,  She started on Saturday August 27th at the Happy Isle trail head in Yosemite valley at 6:14 am.  So that's her fastest time yet,- 6 days, 6 hours and 53 minutes, and might well be the fastest time for an "un-supported woman's record" of the JMT! ( J did the JMT in 8 days last year.)   She was only on the phone for a short bit, and said she'd be heading down the mountaineers route to get a good time on the trailhead to trailhead time. She said she couldn't bear the switchbacks on the regular trail down to Whitney Portal. You can email Jacqueline at:  jf@jacquelineflorine.com Happy Hubby Hans.

Reed On Deck

Pain Ahead! Oh, but it's good pain, right? Reed hasn't done much off his bike this year and it's about to change tomorrow.

It all starts with an ascent of Mt. San Gorgonio. After this 20-ish mile jaunt to the highest point in Southern California, he'll head down, jump on his mtn bike, and ride the Santa Ana River Trail towards Redlands--40-some miles of mainly single track (that's not all downhill and he'll be on a single speed, but he can take solace in that it's been called "the best single track in California"). He'll next switch to the road machine and attempt to quickly ride to the ocean, "the way is only 70 miles. What was it you said, oh, yeah, 'If you save your breath. I feel a man like you can manage it.'"

To top it all off, he's got to prove his form by racing in not one, but TWO crits on Sunday and finish with the main field. Stay tuned!

Oh, and this just in from Josh Fairchild (support team member):

At least we won't get cold.

Some Stuff To Read While Waiting For the Weekend Reports

Two things really worth reading are Tomaz Humar's trip reports. Jesus, talk about an epic! Done any suffering lately?

And a cyclingnews interview with Bobby Julich. He doesn't get much press in the US, where no one but the Texan does, but he's having a great season. Ya know, rode the Tour as an off-season training race and came in 17th...

Oh, and Catra is pretty convicted about doing 41 hours on a running machine to raise some money for needy kids. We'll have a lot more on this later but talk about grim...

Ben Kingsley "Ned" Zissou Bank's Challenge Ready To Go

Here's what's up for the weekend:

SteveZ --

Here's what I've come up with:

In 24 hours, I will complete:

1.  30 routes, all on sight, 5.10 and harder
2.  30 boulder problems, on sight
3.  30k of running while listening to 30 songs by the Eagles (I hate the f---'n Eagles)
4.  300 pull-ups, push-ups, and leg lifts
5.  30 minutes of proper "warm up", Team Zissou-style
6.  30 minutes of nunchucks and/or bo-staff
7.  3 hours of yoga
8.  30 minutes of massage for Lynn
9.  30 minutes of "chase" with Bowie (his favorite game)
10. 3 pounds of ham eaten (weight before cooking, "Hey Tina, eat some ham.")
11. 3 Campari on the rocks, poured by an intern (hey, I'm a lightweight) down the hatch

This will be done while wearing a proper red cap.  Unfortunately, I don't own a speedo.

Should I shoot something too, maybe a Wolverine, with my 12-gauge?

Let me know what you think.

Ned

Mission Accomplished!

From Jen Fieldhouse:

I just completed my little write up about yesterday, and added some more photos.  The day was a blast.  Mission accomplished -- but man am I hurting today!

Thanks for the inspiration!  Birthday challenges are super cool.

John and I are off to Japan on Sunday.  Hopefully I'll be able to walk like a normal person again by then...

Reed Bartlett is Back!

After last year's hiatus, Bubba's back and here's the deal. On Aug 28, he's going to hike to the top of San Gorgonio, the highest point in southern California. Then he hikes down, jumps on his mtn bike, and descends for about 40 miles on the Santa Ana River Trail to his home in Redlands where he switches bike to something a bit quicker for a 60 or 70... or more...mile jaunt to the Pacific ocean where he'll probably catch a wave or something. Eating and drinking to be determind.

Oh, and, btw, the crux is that he plans to enter the Ontario criterium the next day. For a successful challenge he must complete the race in the front group... yikes.

08/4/05

Ben Kingsley "Ned" Zissou Bank's Challenge coming up

On the 14th, he'll attempt...

Well, he's unsure but it will involve lots of climbing (rumor mill says he may try an eclipse the record for routes in a day at Mt Williamson), some proper warm-up, Campari, and a red cap and speedo.

08/3/05

Jen Fieldhouse Update

The challenge has been a blast.  So often we find ourselves saying "we should do this again" or "I can't believe we hadn't tried this sooner" - all of the new things have made the summer way more eventful than usual.  I've been updating my little .mac site pretty regularly, and have posted some pics already.  The last few days I've been fighting a head cold, and had to cut back on my training for the big day.  I hope I can recover and put in a good effort.  After 5 years of waiting for inspiration on a challenge of my own, I won't stand for getting interrupted by snot!

Hi Friends-

I only did one direction on the JMT... I decided a few near death experience was enough for me!!!  I asked my angels if they let me safely pass once I wouldn't do it again.  The trail will be waiting for me next year.
It took me 8 days 3 hours.   I will go back out and hit a couple passes and trails I've always wanted to explore.
These areas won't have hazards fords or 2 mile's of snow on the passes.
I'm just home for a couple days
My feet are so sore from being wet and cold everyday.  No blisters thanks to injinji socks.  They are awesome.

The trail was beautiful this year, it looked so different with all the snow.   Many people told me not to do the triple it would be to risky this year.
I had to at least get out and see the trail.   My PCT friends were right!
Forester Pass had a sketchy shoot that you had to cross one false move and you would fall to your death.  The way up to the trail was major route finding.  Climbing on boulders, couldn't see the trail until half way.
The back side was just as bad.   You had to be super careful.  One false move and you would slide 1,000ft down.
Most everyday my feet were wet.  Yesterday was the only day my feet didn't get wet.
Almost all passes you were route finding and scrambling over boulders.
My friend friend Patti traveled with me  to Tuolumne then bailed she had enough, and wanted to get home.

We got turned around on Pinchot during a lightening storm.  Coming down that same pass the next day a large microwave size boulder got dislodged as I was scrambling down the pass.  It came right at me I rolled out of the way just in time.  I sprained my left wrist and cut my ankle and bruised my butt all this getting out of the way.  Patti was down to the left and heard nothing, she is deaf.
Later that day making our way over Glen pass we were coming down what is called the granite staircase and a huge storm came in very scary ,we were cought off guard no where to hide except under the granite wall that had an overhanging section.  The storm was fast and furious rain, hail and thunder and lightning.  It lasted 30 terrifying minutes.  When the lightning stopped we got the heck out of there.  That night the same thing, a storm came in.  At least we were in my tent.
Muir pass was the worst, 2 miles of pure snow major route finding.  We got lost a little.  Tried to find foot prints when we could.
It was a work out, climbing up the snow ,post holing up to my crouch.  Occasionally getting swolled up by a boulder.   The back side was all water and route finding.

I knew about the two very hazardous stream crossings. Evolution was one which claimed 6 lives this year, the other Bear creek one person died there.   There are also 3 hikers still missing along the JMT.
It seemed to me this year everyone traveled in pairs or groups.  I saw maybe 6 solo hikers.
We crossed Evolution in the Meadow where I was told it was safe.  It was waist deep but wasn't moving fast.

I saw a guy trying to cross Evolution and in the middle he freaked and went back.  He told me the force was incredible.  I yelled across the stream where to go.
With the six people who have died there this year, you would think the rangers would post a sign to go up stream a half mile and cross where it's safe.  The whole trip I was giving hikers beta on where to cross.

Bear was really freaky.  Three hikers had just placed a thin line across to hold onto that day.  It was flimsy.  I crossed and the force in the middle knock me on my back I was lucky to be holding onto the line.  The only thing that kept me up in that section was I had to straddle a rock.  I held on with one hand and used my trekking poll to help me move along.  I was freaked out a little after that.

The trail was a stream of water, most of the journey the mosquitoes were so bad not even 100% toxic deet didn't faze them.
It was never super cold except in Tuolumne it got really, really cold 30's.   Yesterday I went from Tuolumne to Yosemite 26 miles in 8 hours.  it was the first time on the trail I was really able to run without fear of hurting myself or have to negotiate rocks and water crossings.  I saw a group of JMTers and they said there was a fire along the way.  I just said that's not going to stop me I'm going to finish one way of the JMT.  As i got closer it was way off in the distance.
I'm very happy I went out there and saw the beauty of the trail in the snow.  There is always next year and I will be out there.
I'm off the trail for a couple days and I will head back out to explore for a 5 day trip.  Don't worry this area doesn't have snow or hazards water crossings.
Everyone be safe and happy fastpacking..

Namaste,

Catra About to Attempt Triple John Muir Trail Link-up!

Hi Friends-

I'm about to embark on another journey.  This time a triple on the JMT.  I will be the first person to do it... I don't think anyone else would want to, hell I'm not really sure why I'm doing it.  I guess because I like to challenge myself.

The most challenging part will be all the snow on the passes also I must admit I'm a little scared about the river & stream crossings. They are very high this year.  Something I really haven't had to deal with the last two years being out on the JMT.

Please, Please send me positive vibes and pray for me.   636 miles is along way.  i know I can do it if I stay positive.

If anyone wants to email me you can do so at;  mtrhiker@starband.net
Put my name in the subject line.  This goes to Muir ranch and they will give me the emails.

I should reach there on the 21st my first time through.

Hope everyone is having an awesome summer.

Namaste,
Catra

Russ McBride bails on both JMT and 14er records due to snow

He says conditions in the Sierra after the record winter are abyssmal for moving quickly. He reports 7 miles of sun cups at one point. Sounds grim. Catra leaves tomorrow. We wish her better conditions but...

Tim Lindl's 04 Challenge Switched To Attempt At PCT

Hey Steve,

I was just checking out the site and noticed you still had me down for a possible challenge in 2004. I, obviously, didn't do the challenge because I decided to focus on trying to do the Pacific Crest Trail this summer (which I leave for tomorrow), and didn't want to blow out my knees.

Why am I writing you this e-mail? Pure, unadulterated shame. Please don't disregard future challenge proposals because I tarnished my reputation with this one faux pas.

Anyhoo, as my birthday is right around when I'll be finishing the trail (Sep. 23), I'll be looking to do some kind of challenge that involves the trail. Perhaps a 52-mile day will be in order.

Have a good summer.

Tim

Subject: My Fritter Attempt

Queen Jacqueline,

I kneel before you in defeat.  You may now take the sword to my neck -- for
you amaze and inspire me.

I also had to kneel AFTER my fritter attempt and pray to the porcelain God*

Humbly,

If you do like this short clip we have the full event available on video --

Just linked to us. They're a new site with a bunch of cool stuff to look at. Some vids are better than others but it's worth a stop if you're stuck at your desk and jonezin' to see someone who's not stuck at theirs.

Jonah Harrison

For my 32nd birthday (April 20), I was hoping for something as badass as Todd Mei's, but I can't drink as much as he can.

So I propose:

Hike to Snow Creek Wall near Leavenworth, WA (~3 mi. times 2 up and down).
Climb 2 grade III multipitch climbs (Outerspace, III 5.9 and Orbit, III 5.9) leading every pitch.
Climb 3 v2s
Bike 32 miles
Finish ride at Gustav's in Leavenworth and drink 3 20 oz. pints in 32 minutes.

I plan on doing it all in one day of course, Saturday April 23, weather permitting.

Some Dude From Seattle

Greetings,

Found your page, on top of hearing a recent interview with Jack L., so am getting psyched for my own paltry effort at stupendous stupidity. Final list pending, but here's the story so far. 37th birthday, Saturday, April 9, Seattle and vicinity.

370m of climbing - lead (w/ some TR laps to make up the difference) every route (5.9-5.12) at Nevermind Wall, Exit 38

3,700 vert. feet of hiking (typ. 8-9 mile r/t) - numerous options in the vicinity - Mt. Si, Bandera, etc.

37 holes of frisbee golf - just because I really, really suck at frisbee golf.

370 ml single-malt scotch (Laphroig or equivalent)

3.7 or 37 oz. beers - I dunno.

Since I don't have fritters - the local equivalent will be to eat an entire Gordito's Grande Burrito (fajita-style) in one sitting - the thing is wrapped in two tortillas, and looks like a football. I've done it once, but it required starvation and working all day in February rain.

What the hell, some situps and pullups.

Now to round up my support crew...

Thanks for the inspiration of fellow silly people everywhere.

Vance

Dan Davis

Hey guys, I’m writing on my personal website about an upcoming birthday challenge I’m planning to do and I want to include a link to your website in my blog.

I know this probably sounds odd, but some people are really touchy about having links to their pages so I always like to ask permission first. Any objections? (Dan obviously doesn't know us too well. All weirdness accepted, especially if it involves suffereing)

 Thanks, Dan

(The challenge looks good. Check it out.)

Derek's Diary

Happy New Year!

I am off to a not-quite a flying start, but at least a start.  Let me know how you want me make a report (how often, how long, format, etc.)  I have dusted off two books, ran about 34 miles (and 8 tonight planned) this month, lost about 6 pounds, however, I haven't been able to stick to the 30 minutes of exercise a day program.  The wetness earlier this month really cramped my style.  For example, no bike and no ocean swim, fo' shizzle.  My half-marathon about two weeks away and I haven't run over 10 miles in quite a while.  Maybe since my last marathon in March!

1/19/05

Tony Schollmeier From Wisconsin

I updated the challenge due to the fact that need to run and swim more and the hall director isn't too keen on buildering. so anyway here are some pictures from the fitter eatin' last year, the url for my webpage, and the updated challenge.

Thanks. Tony

The Challenge:

MY GOAL FOR THIS CHALLENGE IS TO RAISE $2,100 FOR THE GLAUCOMA FOUNDATION

1. 21 LAPS OF THE STOUT TRACK IN THE MPR

2. 210 SIT-UPS

3. 210 PULL-UPS

4. 210 PUSH-UPS

5. 21 LAPS OF THE SWIMMING POOL

6. 21 RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

7. I MUST WEAR 21 DIFFERENT SHIRTS DURING THE COURSE OF THE DAY (AT LEAST .5 HOURS PER SHIRT)

8. 3 APPLE FRITTERS FROM THE GREENBUSH BAKERY (TRUST ME THIS IS MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THAN IT SOUNDS)
